" The Memory That Refused to Fade "

The Memory That Refused to Fade

Udaipur welcomed them like a dream.

Golden sunlight stretched across the sky, reflecting softly on the shimmering waters of Lake Pichola. The breeze carried a quiet calm, almost as if the city itself was whispering old stories into the air.

As everyone stepped out of the bus, the energy instantly shifted.

“This place is BEAUTIFUL!” Sweeta exclaimed, spinning once just to take it all in.

“Perfect for drama,” Juhi added with a grin.

“Perfect for love stories,” Raj said, glancing around meaningfully.

“…maybe,” Veer murmured.

His gaze wasn’t on the lake.

It was on Ruhi.

She noticed.

And looked away.

---

As evening settled in, the lake turned softer, quieter—almost intimate.

Ruhi walked alone along the water’s edge, her steps slow, her thoughts anything but peaceful.

She came here for silence.

But her mind refused to cooperate.

“You keep running away.”

His voice.

Again.

She didn’t turn immediately.

“I like peace,” she replied.

Veer stepped closer. “Or you’re avoiding something.”

“Like what?”

“Me.”

Now she turned.

Slightly annoyed.

Slightly affected.

“You’re not that important.”

“Then why do you react every time?”

The distance between them had already disappeared.

Neither of them noticed when.

Or maybe—

Neither cared.

---

Before the moment could deepen—

“THERE you are!”

Arjun walked in, casual as ever, breaking the tension like it didn’t exist.

“I’ve been looking for you,” he said, smiling at Ruhi.

He stepped beside her naturally.

Too naturally.

“Come, I found a better spot.”

He gently held her wrist.

Simple.

Friendly.

Normal.

But not to Veer.

“Leave her hand.”

The words came out sharp.

Cold.

Both of them turned.

Arjun’s expression didn’t change. “Relax, I’m just—”

“I said leave it.”

Silence.

Tension thickened instantly.

Ruhi pulled her hand back herself.

“Stop it. Both of you.”

“I’m her friend,” Arjun said calmly.

“I didn’t ask,” Veer replied.

“You don’t need to.”

A quiet challenge passed between them.

Unspoken.

Clear.

“Enough,” Ruhi said firmly. “This is childish.”

And she walked away.

Leaving both of them standing there.

Watching.

---

Later that evening, the resort courtyard glowed under warm lights.

Laughter echoed again.

Everything seemed normal.

Almost.

A stylish girl approached Veer confidently.

“Veer? The CEO?”

“Yes.”

“I’ve seen you at a business event,” she smiled. “You’re even more handsome in real life.”

She stepped closer.

“Are you free tonight? Maybe we can—”

From a distance—

Ruhi saw.

And something inside her shifted.

She turned.

And walked away.

Fast.

“Uh oh… jealousy unlocked,” Sweeta whispered.

“Finally,” Juhi added.

---

“Ruhi!”

Veer followed her instantly.

She didn’t stop.

“Ruhi, stop.”

He caught her wrist.

Gentle.

But firm.

She turned, her expression colder now.

“Go back to your ‘fan’.”

“What?”

“She was waiting.”

“I don’t care about her.”

“Not my problem.”

She tried to pull away.

He didn’t let go.

“Then why are you upset?”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

Silence.

Their faces closer now.

Too close to lie.

Then—

His voice changed.

Softer.

Deeper.

“You used to do this.”

She frowned slightly. “What?”

“Get angry when someone came near me.”

She froze.

And then—

The memory came.

Clearer this time.

Stronger.

A small girl.

Holding tightly.

Refusing to let go.

“No! You mine! Don’t talk to other girls!”

A boy, slightly older, sighing—

“You’re too clingy…”

“I’m your wife!”

---

Ruhi’s breath caught.

“…you remember?”

“Not everything.”

Veer stepped closer.

“But enough.”

His voice softened further.

“You wouldn’t let go of my hand… ever.”

Her heartbeat grew uneven.

“You used to cry if I ignored you.”

“Stop…” she whispered.

“And now,” he continued quietly, “you’re doing the same.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Emotional.

“That was childhood,” she said, but her voice lacked certainty.

“Was it?”

He gently lifted her hand.

Just like before.

Familiar.

Effortless.

“Then why does it feel the same?”

She looked at him.

Conflicted.

Guarded.

And yet—

Not pulling away.

“I’m not that girl anymore.”

A small smile touched his lips.

“I know.”

A pause.

“But I think… she never left.”

The wind moved softly around them.

The lake reflected the fading light.

And for the first time—

She didn’t step back.

---

They stood side by side now.

Not distant anymore.

Not strangers either.

“You remember everything?” she asked quietly.

“Enough to know…”

He turned to her.

His voice low.

Certain.

“You were mine first.”

Her heart reacted before her mind could stop it.

“Don’t assume things.”

“I don’t assume.”

A beat.

“I remember.”

Their eyes met.

No teasing.

No arguments.

Just truth.

Uncomfortable.

Unavoidable.

Real.

---

Because some bonds don’t begin in the present.

They begin long before you understand them.

In moments you forget.

In promises you didn’t know you made.

And sometimes—

They return.

Not as memories.

But as feelings you can’t explain.

Some promises are made in childhood…

and completed in destiny.
